The Space Legacy of the Omega Speedmaster

In 1959, Omega launched the second-generation Speedmaster, the CK2998. A key design feature of this model was its sword-shaped hands (officially known as "Alpha" hands), which minimized obstruction of the chronograph sub-dials. Additionally, the CK2998 lacked crown guards and introduced the black aluminum tachymeter bezel that would become a standard design element for the Speedmaster line. By 1962, the CK2998 had set the stage for the Speedmaster’s legendary history in space. On October 3 of that year, astronaut Wally Schirra wore his personal Speedmaster CK2998 during a mission for the U.S. human spaceflight program. Accompanying Schirra as he orbited the Earth six times, the CK2998 became the first Omega watch to enter space. Since NASA had not yet begun the process of selecting an official "space watch," this was not an official NASA initiative; rather, NASA allowed astronauts to carry a limited number of personal items, and Schirra chose the Omega Speedmaster CK2998 as his trusted companion. Remarkably, Omega was unaware at the time that one of its watches had actually gone into space.

As the "first Omega in space," the CK2998 played a pivotal role in the history of both the Speedmaster collection and the Omega brand. Now, more than 60 years after Schirra’s historic mission, Omega has released a special re-edition of this "first Omega in space" model in 2024—paying tribute to the legend and bringing it back to life (Reference: 310.30.40.50.06.001).
